 George Barris in front of the Munster Mobile 2014 George Barris shaped my life. Truly. As child of the ‘60s and ‘70s I grew up watching his famous cars in TV shows that would forever imprint themselves on my psyche and later, on my choice of careers. The Munsters, Beverly Hillbillies, Batman, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Green Hornet…. iconic TV shows all with way cool cars that the shows revolved around, almost like the cars were part of the cast of characters.  The hot rod from the TV show The Munsters Rock and roll, hot rods and muscle cars burned their way into my soul as a youth, and like the cars Barris kustomized, my destiny was shaped little by little. I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with George several times at various car shows.  Gearhead CEO Michelle and George Barris in front of the Munster Mobile 2014 He was a doll, absolutely charming and delightful, still working the angles, promoting his brand and the line of famous cars he became known for. He invited me to come visit him and tour his museum, and urged me to call his daughter Joji to set up an interview. I had planned on doing that this upcoming spring of 2016, but sadly I won’t get that opportunity now. George passed away Nov. 5, 2015 at the age of 89.  Michelle with George 2015 He was scooting around in a little motorized jalopy, which hadn’t been kustomized, much to my surprise. Delighted to talk with fans and pose for pictures, he was sharp and with it, sporting a groovy yellow satin jacket, hipster shades and slicked back thinning gray hair both times I met him.
 Grampa Munster's Dragula at Viva Las Vegas 2015 We always fought over who got to be Batman and drive the Batmobile. Of course as children we made due with whatever we could find, our old red wagon, or my pink stingray bike, and used our imagination to supply the special features. Thank you George for all you did to energize the imagination of my youth, and fuel my path towards the weird, the quirky, and the kustomised culture. Never be boring, always stand out and do your own thing. These are lessons from George that I will embrace always. Rest in Peace George. Thank you for your vision and your impact on the pop culture that made me who I am.

 Memorial Day Weekend always brings lots of activities for families, and the 34th Annual West Coast Kustoms Cruisin' Nationals Car show is right up there on Must Do activities! Originally held in Paso Robles, CA, it moved to it's current location at the Santa Maria, CA Fairway about 8 years ago.
Loaded with kustoms, hotrods, rat rods and all manner of cool stuff to buy this family friendly event is a great way to check out some cool cars and celebrate the holiday. Plus, Friday night there is a car cruise that is not to be missed! Check out their website for more information, and if you make it, stop by the Gearhead booth to say hi!  Its finally happening; Gearhead® is heading to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend! The fine folks at Cock Grease have invited Gearhead to share the booth, which is an honor! Vending at this show has been a dream of mine for many years, almost as long as it's been going on. This will be their 18th year if you can believe that!
Unlike so many other "hip" events that have gotten co-opted by the media, Viva Las Vegas has kept its cool street cred with the underground, and has stayed pretty true to it's roots, probably because it continues to be run and organized by the original main man himself Tom Ingram. He didn't sell out for money like so many other events and because of that, it continues to inspire and attract awesome bands, killer cars and a fan base from around the world! Way to go Tom! So stop by the booth and say hi, get a free sticker or two, and enjoy the fabulous events that are all part of the Viva Las Vegas Experience! The vision and goofiness of Ed Roth, known to his friends and fans as Big Daddy, set the stage for much that Gearhead and others involved in this wacky world of hot rodding and Kustom Kulture took to heart as their own.
His style was unique and while I never met the man, he is known as a true original. Gearhead paid tribute to his legend in issue #12. He was one of Mike's favorites and I know this issue was a dream come true. So grab your Rat Fink and give him/her/it a hug and join me in sending birthday greetings to heaven where I"m sure he's painted the clouds with wild monsters and wacky Weird Ohs. |
